Immigration ControlBiometrics - Biometrics
| Immigration Control All visitors to the US now have a digital photo and forefinger prints taken. This system obviously requires a huge databank somewhere, but presumably it is a viable system of keeping these records available for cross-checking purposes. The imagination boggles at the logistics involved in collating the data from all international US airports. |
| They say they do this, but do they?A friend from a country that is known for certain criminal activities received a US Visa and was digitally finger printed and probably a digital copy of their photo was made. However, upon entry to the United States, they entered without digital finger prints or photos. So there was no actual biometric comparison between the person receiving the visa and the person entering the USA. Brazil was supposedly doing the same thing to Americans (in return), however, when I entered Brazil (twice) there as no finger printing or special treatment for Americans. |
| Every time I enter the US I see the lines of 'aliens' as they like calling them here, being fingerprinted and photographed. I actually asked one of the officials once about this procedure and he was also a bit skeptical about the usefulness of it, I suppose because of the mind-boggling search and compare facilities that would be required to make it useful in any meaningful way. I suppose it is really intended to be a deterrent to would be criminals, but then like gun licensing, that has never worked, has it? |
| My sister lives in a border state...Arizona...and she said that illegal aliens are a huge problem over there. Unfortunately, in their quest to come over to the land of opportunity, many of these people have died in the extreme heat of an Arizona summer. I think that's the saddest part of this whole thing. I know I'll hear you guys say..."then they shouldn't come over in the first place". My stink is that immigration is such a huge problem, why the heck isn't it fixed yet? |
| What I'd like to know is why the US doesn't have an option for retired people from 1st world countries who can prove that they have sufficient means of support, to immigrate here? The UK has what is called an 'independant means' visa. Seems to me that this is this should be the case here too. Why not? |
| Most countries are just opposed to the idea of immigrants flooding in, and this translates to an entrenched set of rules and regulations that rarely gets changed. Over the years these things are probably just ignored as a matter of principle rather than because of logic. |
#6Two trips round the moon | It is said that the USA do not enforce their immigration laws because immigration provides an abundance of uneducated workers, which is in the interests of capital, as it reduces the cost of labor and thus increases competitiveness of domestic industries on the global market. |
| Maybe if so many Americans wouldn't be so stupid and unionize every time they don't like something about there job. Maybe there might be more incentive for companies to stay US based instead of relocating to Foreign countries. DOn't get me wrong I am not speaking of every single person who lives in the United states but seriously, a huge majority of people simply have no work ethic what-so-ever. |
| Biometrics my axe. With the millions of people going in and out of their country, how can they possibly ID all their visitors, unless they looks suspicious but what if they're not? I think they do the finger scanning for future reference and to monitor how frequently one visits their country and if it looks too suspicious then that person will be on the hot list of people to look at. |
| Well, as a load of you have said, the immigration procedure is normally easier said than done. That would be a whole complicated and long procedure considering what would have to be put in place to make it feasible. On the other hand, it is not advisable to overlook the simple requirement even when you are let to go scot free. It could just be a way of monitoring and evaluation. |
| Well that is for sure biometrics my shoe, anyway where does that name came from? That kind of technology certainly have a long way to go before it could be implemented. I think it is the way to get those bad people out of the airport and moving out of the country in disguise. I just hope that this bad people don't peal others thumb and use it just like Hannibal peal his captors face to escape. |
| The intended purpose would be to keep the bad people out. The real people is to install control and surveillance over everyone. |
| Yeah, but it only happens in the movie Ash. I think this technology would be a lot of help mostly to get rid of those dirty crimes at airports or at any other establishments. |
| "Destruction of the Common Man"
These systems will serve only to empower the dictators (ie: the USA Government) and destroy the common man. The criminals or terrorists will simply develop simple means around these "security measures". |
| Biometrics is becoming very much a serious thing indeed, in the world today. They will soon be using such devices for one to get into their houses and what not, if not already. |
| "A legal permanent resident from Sierra Leone West Africa."
Thank you for educating me about the essence of biometrics which I think is good to protect us all in the United States and the Country itself from bad people/criminal elements.Frankly speaking to get a visa to come to the United States from my country Sierra Leoneis not an easy task. Therefore, when I got my ASC appointment few days ago to for my biometrics, I asked a friend to explain to me what that means. He told me he did not know about that.I tried to contact 800 but I was unable to understand the directives of the answering machine.I therefore resolved to wait for my appointment date. While waiting, I said to myself it is like I'm going to go through other immigration processes again in the United States after sucessfully going through all the processes at the U.S Embassy in Freetown and the Immigration at the airport in Siattle. This issue of biometrics is strange to me and the understanding I have got makes me realized that it is a very good initiative and it should be continued to be implemented.I am 100% in support of it and I am encouraging all immigrants in the United States to go for theirs when requested to do so. I will go for mine i.e(ASC appointment)early next month to get my biometrics done.Thank you. |
| "My experience at the Application Support Center"
On Thursday 12/24/09, I left Richmond together with my wife to get her biometrics done at the Immigrtion Headquarters at Norffolk Virginia .We were driven by my elder brother and happened to be the first customers to arrive at the office at about 08:30 hours, in the morning. We met the office and staff intact waiting to attend to customers. That was a very good experience of job discipline as compared to Sierra Leone were civil servants do not go to work early and expect the customer to wait for them in the office. My wife gave her ASC Appointment letter to the security guard who examined it carefully before she was given a form to fill. After filling the form, she took it to the security guard again who examined it for the second time before directing her where to go for her biometrics. Within few minutes, her biometrics was taken. In order to save myself from further Transportation cost, I asked the security guard whether it was possible to take my biometrics the same day with my wife, though my appointment was calling for early January. Since the office was not that busy, the Immigration staff decided to use their discretion by requesting for my ASC Appointment letter which I gave to them. After examining it carefully, they gave me a form to fill and within few minutes, my biometrics was taken. It was really a good experience and I appreciate the efforts of the immigration Staff so much. I want to share this experience with all lawful immigrants in the United States that there should be no fear of waste of time for biometrics appointment, the guys at Norffolk are very efficient and the biometrics exercise is for our own security. In view of that, I'm advising everybody to go for theirs when requested to do so. By Alhaji Tiejan-Kamara |
| Biometrics is certainly a cool thought, but it can do a lot more harm than good. Imagine if a person was to use Biometrics in order to steal someone's identity. |
| "Finally!"
Finally someone with a brain that they actually USE! |
| SO do you mean to say that some of the forum buddies here do not use their brains over the matter, is that so George, and that we should be thankful that you and brent manages to come over and posted a very intelligent post? If so then kindly post here some more information on the pros and cons of this certain technology. Thanks a lot guys and have a nice day. |
| Do not get mad with George. It is his right to speak up things that are troubling his mind. I do not have anything against anyone but I believe that this technology, and any other technology have their own pros and cons. So we should check out both of the pros and also the cons. But anyway, have a good day guys and keep all of those posts coming in. |
