Laptop logins

Thank author of this post/commentWhat ever happened to the move towards a fingerprint reader as standard on laptops? I don't even know if this option is available, whereas a while back it was the hot new topic. By now the glitches should have been ironed out and it seems to me to be a great idea.

Thank author of this post/commentI read that the system was so fraught with bugs and problems that most manufacturers abandoned it. Not sure if this is so, but I certainly don't see them on standard hardware anywhere.

Somewhere cold
Thank author of this post/commentI agree, from what I read there were so many problems with this that I believe that this idea has been "scrapped". I could be wrong though, there might have been some kind of update regarding this that I'm not aware of.

Thank author of this post/commentThe fingerprinting done now on a regular basis for tourists arriving at US airports proves that the technology is available in a usable form. Big question is whether it cost efficient to utilize this on mass-produced devices to give the feedback signal necessary to say unlock a laptop.

Thank author of this post/commentAs a matter of interest, I have noticed with the airport fingerprint scanners, that they seem to malfunction a fair amount depending on the dryness of the skin pores. I've seen harassed immigration personnel struggling to get the readers to work on some travellers, and apparently this can occur where there is not enough natural moisture available on the skin give a decent image.

Watching my back
Thank author of this post/commentThere are newer ones that come with it built in and they are supposedly very good. I think it's a matter of 6 months or so and all laptops will have this and it will work very well.

This new form of fingerprinting technology is amazing.... it secures your data and the best part is that no one can access your data at any cost...

Thank author of this post/commentThat looks like some crapp laptop sales page that really has nothing to do with fingerprint technology.

Why is it secure? Why not scan someone's finger print and save the data. Then use that data to open the "secure" data?

Once the print is digitized its just a digital image that doesn't involve any bloody mess to manuipulate!

Wow that link above has nothing to do with fingerprinting. I know Martin just said that but I just don't understand, didn't that lady think we would notice?

#9

Tracy had not anticipated being caught out, or so it appears. The whole piece of technology seems to be filled with flaws and discrepancies to the extent that maybe rolling them out for commercial purposes would be unfeasible. Does this serve to suggest that indeed fingerprint laptop computers exist though in limited amounts. I second Matt about the method he has suggested only that the mode of operation is not quite clear. At some point, I feel matching the fingerprints would still come into play.

As I browsed the computer shops lately, I have noticed that most "new" laptops provide this biometrics or fingers scanning technology so you can't really say that the notion has been abandoned or postponed. Before a technology or a function gets "standardized" usually by ISO (International Organization for Standardization), the candidate should pass all the necessary requirements in order for it to be implemented. Seeing the various reaction of some end-users here I can deduct that it is not ready for the said standardization.

Thank author of this post/commentAre they really effective, or superficially? Yeah, it looks good, but is your finger print just converted to a code that can be faked out?

#12

moy

Shaun, that could be the case but the big question is are they really effective. What has been done to seal the loopholes that will most likely exist?

#13

Why do you need biometrics for your personal laptop? It is not likely that everyone would want to get their hands on it (not unless you are carrying a government secret there hahaha). There are machines exclusive for fingerprint reading or biometrics so why apply it on the laptop. Honestly, people are really starting to be so lame that instead of typing the password themselves, they would rather just place their thumb on the laptop and boom, instant access.

I agree, finger print scanners for laptops is a total waste of laptop space. Not as you will use it often and it is that secure. Believe me when your laptop gets stolen cracking it will be just as taking candies from a baby. If a establishment is serious in implementing biometrics then they can just avail a more reliable fingerprint reader rather than depending on an unstable laptop. That's my view.

I think it is stupid to apply the fingerprint identity technology on laptops. It would just occupy lots of precious space in your laptops at the same time it would look silly as well. I think you should have to b very responsible and keen when it comes to taking care of your things most particularly your laptop so that it would not be stolen or infiltrated too.

Have a nice day

Thank author of this post/comment"Blame the Victim!"

Of course! Blame the victim!

Even careful people get their laptops stolen sometimes... by using suitable encryption they can keep their business and/or personal data safe in such circumstances.

Does the fingerprint reader really help or is it just a superficial gimmick that helps sell laptops but won't really protect the user from a serious hacker?

#17

Mario

Yeah, i have to agree. If only the owner of the gadgets like laptops are careful enough to not let their belongings stolen, then the problem would be minimized or there would be no problem at all.

Looking forward to hearing more on this very informative forum.

The finger print reader may not protect from a genuine hacker, but at the same time, how many of those do you really think that you are going to get coming around to try yo steal your PC? Most hackers aren't petty thieves anyway. Unless, thievery is a fancy of theirs.

#19

Calpie

I suggest that people must be very careful when handling important items like laptops.

Eve has a point over the matter. I think that if people just find thievery as a 'hobby', then be alert at all times.

But anyway, the biometrics technology would be a great help. It just needs to be well studied so that the users would know the potential and capability of this technology. Thanks a lot.

Those biometrics are of great help to people who would want to secure their belongings, but what if hackers finds its way to infiltrating even those gadgets that have biometrics for security purposes? No matter how careful we are if there are people who uses also the technology to revolutionize the way they infiltrate computers and other gadgets, then what ever we do, all of them would be useless. all of them.

Thank author of this post/comment"Faking out Fingerprint Readers..."

Didn't you read about the Chinese woman that had $15, 000 worth of plastic surgery to and was able to fake out immigration in Japan and their biometric security system?

My gosh, thanks for posting that link George from..... anywhere.

I haven't thought of that thing until now.

Biometrics is becoming something that can easily cause identity theft to take off and move to higher notches of potential.
