30days late before reporting to credit?

Lana from The Dental Office -

Is it true that a creditor has to give a 30 day period after the due date before reporting late payments against your credit/credit score? Do utility places report you for being past 30 days late, or is it usually just loans and credit cards?

Comment #1 Elroy from New York -

I noticed verizon started reporting all payments (non-late) on one of my phone lines. I'm not sure why they aren't reporting on all my lines.

If you read your credit report, you will see that late payments are only shown if they are 30 days late.

Comment #2 Suzie from Washington DC -

Is verizon a cell company or a landline phone company? I have never had a credit reporting from a utility even if I was past 30 days late. I don't do it all of the time, but sometimes when I get in a bind I go a little later than I like. I worked with the gas and electric company and they only reported if there was a credit charge off.

Comment #3 Elroy from New York -

Verizon is both landline and cellular. I was referring to a landline account.

Comment #4 Suzie from Washington DC -

Wow, I could believe a cellular company would do that, but I have never heard a landline company to do that. Are they reporting positive and negative credit or just negative.

Comment #5 Elroy from New York -

Well they are reporting just positive and the line is always paid on time. It is fairly recently they started. I was surprised to see the entry in my report. I have several lines (with seperate bills) and only one is reported.

Looking at it again, it is odd. They reported to both Trans Union and Equifax. But the last time they reported was 4/2006. In the two year payment history, TransUnion shows March as "OK". Equifax doesn't show anything.

So it looks like at most they reported 1 time.

I'm getting kind of worried about my land line phone bill. I switch the dated the payment is due now everytime my bill is 1 day late, they send me a collection notice. They never did that before.
