Questions: is it safer to use a credit card or a debit card? - Identity Theft
| Questions: is it safer to use a credit card or a debit card? is it safer to use a credit card or a debit card in terms of protecting yourself from identity theft? thanks! |
| I think when you talk about identity theft, the threat that thieves can steal your identity in using both type of cards is just the same. The difference is that when you use debit cards, you can limit the amount of money they can steal from you. While in using credit cards, you can lose the money up to your credit limit. So, for me, it's better and safer to use debit cards. |
| "Debit vs Credit Card"
With a debit card the money is right out of your bank account and gone till you fight with your bank over getting it back. Might cause you to bounce checks... which could result in your arrest. With a credit card it only affects your credit limit and the charge is removed while the credit card company investigates it. |
| credit card as well as debit card both are vulnerable to frauds.Credit card users are in much more favorable conditions. Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act you can not be hold responsible for any of the unauthorized charges. All you need to do is inform your bank about the situation and check your credit report to make sure it has not affected your credit score. |
| I think that both credit card and debit card are vulnerable to fraud. The only difference as what George said is, when you use your debit card, that's money straight from your bank account, which is very hard to recover whereas if you use your credit card, the thieves would only be able to use your credit limit but not your cash. In case any of these are stolen, you can ask your bank to block them. |
| We really have to make sure that we are dealing with real and authorized personnel before we make any transactions with them. I have seen some incidents where people got victimized with identity theft using both credit and debit card. It is really alarming to be in this kind of situation, especially when your vital personal information are being compromised. We really have to be careful and watchful at all times. |

Both are vulnerable to identity theft/fraud. The biggest difference is:Using a credit card limits your liability for unauthorized purchases up to $50.00 and in some cases zero. Read the fine print disclosure that accompanied your card. And I agree with some posts, using a debit can limit your liability with the amount in your account. But what if a potential thief knew when your account had a significant amount of funds in it before you even knew your debit card was stolen? I know, that's pretty far-fetched but it does happen. Don't let it happen to you! My advice is to always use a random combination of letters and numbers - including CAPS and special characters (%<*(@, etc.) for your passwords. And always change your passwords regularly! Hope this helps! Best of luck... |
