Questions: is there something like facebook for kids under 13?

Thank author of this post/commentI have boys ages 8 and10, I would like to allow them to experience the web in a controlled/safe manner that isn't going to open them up to identity theft, petifiles, and indecent content. This includes email, facebook, etc. but for free.

This post made me inspired to allow my kid as well to experience web browsing in a safe manner. I would suggest some helpful websites intended for kids. Its more of educating kids. You could probably check kidSites.com that gives greater opportunity for kids to learn many things. NFB kids-Ludovic is an interactive websites divided into 8 zones. Get Net Wise is a very good website as well that provides various links for kids interaction and learning.

I agree that today's world of advanced technology already requires kids to have early access to it and doing so is one way of giving them an early start in information technology.

Still, it is best to always guide our children patiently as they surf the world wide web to make sure that they would only gain access to kid-friendly sites. The advent of technology may have made life more convenient for us but it has also given everyone, as in people from all age brackets, quick access to forbidden and illegal sites.

Thank author of this post/comment"Common Sense Media"

Have you checked out Common Sense Media?

This is a nonprofit group that reviews all sorts of media including Internet sites. Media is rated on many aspects such as educational, consumerism, privacy, engagement, etc. It's a great site for checking out what's out there and what other parents and professionals are saying about it.

There are a lot of social networking sites available to children listed on this site. The link I posted takes you directly to the reviews of those sites.

For me, using Facebook at the age of 8-10 is just OK but of course, its the parents' responsibility to supervise and set limitations to their children in using facebook. If you know what I mean.
