When a Family Member DiesIdentity Theft - Identity Theft
When a Family Member Dies When someone in your family dies, make sure that you contact EVERY government agency possible to inform them of their death and to send back the SSN card and a Death Certificate to ensure that the information is taken off the registers. My uncle died 2 years ago and one of the government parties sent a letter to him (it came to me because I was executrix) asking for donations. Now most people would just toss that letter but I sent it back with a note saying that he had died and please take him off any of your mailing lists. This made me think of other things and other mailing lists that they may be on. So to prevent people from going through the obituaries in the paper and getting information on these people to create a "new identity" for themselves make sure you touch every base.
Thanks for the tip. My grandma recently died. I'm going to talk to my father and make sure he does the same. I never really thought about it until i saw this, so thank you!
I think that is very good advice. when we lose a loved one things like this can be overlooked in our grief, or something that one might not even think to do anyway. thanks for posting this advice.
Good advice. Alls it takes is for a dishonest court house worker getting ahold of the death cert and taking over the persons identity.
A couple of months ago a couple got arrested here for going through the grave yards and assuming deceased peoples identities. They would then use the peoples credit to buy high dollar items. Because there was nobody to catch it they got away with it for close to ten years!! The government believes the total thief to be around two million dollars.
That is some great advice.. Do you have any tips one how people can help prevent or detect identity theft of the ones who are still living? It seems to be a big issue in the Us.
Thank you so much riverqueen. That is probably some of the best advice I have ever been given. Like you said who honestly would think about this in their time of greif. Even though it would not effect the deceased person, it would effect the wife/family members. I will make sure to remember this advice for the future.
Some people can be just inhumane. How does your consience allow you to be that wicked? In response to Adam, detecting those on identity theft, especially when the deceased is a family member, might not be so easy an option. The best and easiest ways would be to secure all the person's personal items and keep all their information updated. As riverqueen has indicated, it might including returning mails to the sender(s). Yes, hectic at the beginning but rewarding at the end. Really sound advice
Let me just give you with a possible scenario where neglecting to inform the proper authority about the passing away of a loved one could be abused. In the Philippines, identity thieves and corrupt government officials use the dead to further improve their chances of winning in the local elections. I am talking about already deceased people already voting, or their name is still being use for personal gains of some twisted government officials.
That was very true, Brenda. In the Philippines, the identity of the deceased persons are still being used by some of the heartless and corrupt personalities in the government. I am not referring to all the government officials but some are really like users. I think this identity thefts must be given enough and appropriate attention. And i have to agree that when our special someone dies, we should not be pre occupied by grief, there are some important things that we still need to do.
People in power use identity theft to steal votes, and have been doing so for quite a long time and in many a country, all across the globe. This should come as no news to anyone that is in the know, but if it does, add this note to your roster of things to consider.
How can one truly be sure that identity theft is used to steal votes? This just seems quite a bit unusual and unrealistic.
Identity theft is really being used to steal votes during the election period in some country, this is true curtis and I cannot blame you if you are not aware of this stuff since maybe you're country is not having some sort of election bad tactics. Good thing for your nation. Also, if you read some articles regarding this thing, you will get surprised by the statistics of identity theft used during election.
I have to agree on that. Like in some countries in Asia, I heard that in the Philippines identity theft is widely used during election and so it is saddening to learn that those who are in position are the ones responsible for this act. Hope that this illegal activities wont last that long and would eventually end soon. Most especially during this time when the election in the said country is coming near.
