e-mail fishing

Thank author of this post/commentRecently I received an email saying that I won a sweepstake from coca-cola. The email stated that I was selected randomly. I only had to fill out an online form. This would’ve been great if it wasn’t to good to be true. I called coca-cola right away and I was told they knew about it and coca-cola had nothing to do with it. They called it a fishing scheme. I was advised not to fill the form out because it was fraud. And an attempt to steal my personal information. Boy am I glad I called them!!!

Thank author of this post/commentI always use this as a general rule of thumb....

"If it's too good to be true then it probably isn't."

Do not believe this at all, it is a scam. I got one of these e-mails years ago, and I looked into it, and it was fake do not fall for it.

Just like receiving email that you won a Lotto even without buying a lotto ticket. If you did not buy a ticket or if you did not join any raffle draws how could you ever win? Be very cautious about internet scams.

I have received such emails saying that I have won a lottery which they later asked me about my name and address. I was wondering how can they use such information for illegal transactions when they don't even have a photo of me, any legal details regarding my character, my signature and many others? How can they stole or use my identity if all they have is a mre address such as name and address?

The lottery emails are probably not to steal your identity... but to steal your money.

No doubt sooner or later you will have to pay a tax or fee to receive your winnings... of course there is no lottery winning and the scammers will be happy to receive whatever fees they can convince you to send.

No matter what it is they are after, we should not let them be successful on using our identity and all the information regarding us. And guys, just like cespesta said, if we had not join any raffle then there is no chance of us winning and whatsoever. We cannot be fooled if we do not let then fool us. Just be cautious on each and every move and decision you make and your safe from all of those scams.

Unfortunately, how we live is far removed from how we ought – and since you can't count on people to be good, you have to take steps to guard against online identity theft. For one, do not store vital information on your computer – things like bank account numbers, your Social Security Number, and financial information such credit cards and other account information. Strictly limit online commerce, and check sites you do business with thoroughly. (Even eBay and Amazon aren't completely immune.) Good firewalls and anti-virus/spyware software is also a must. You don't want to need payday loans to pay for purchases you didn't make, or for lawyers to help get you out of fraudulent charges.

Thanks for all of those advices. I have to agree that it is indeed not safe nowadays to store vital information in your own computers. Those hackers would surely find their way towards those information and will probably use it to whatever purpose they intend to. But anyway, there are still some ways to eventually safeguard all of those information. Have a great day guys and keep all of those ideas coming.
