Internet monitoring

Milly from Wisconsin -

I think the best way to monitor your kids on the internet is to just have the computer set up in a room where there is lots of activity. I tried using a program that came with my dsl and I couldnt even check my other email accounts without having to shout it off and reboot my computer. What a pain in the butt.

Computers where there will be children using it should ALWAYS, ALWAYS be in an open area with lots of traffic. That way whoever passes by can see exactly what is going on.

Also the best way is to sit with your kids and ask them where they are surfing and check in the histories of where they have been.

I had a friend who was forever getting viruses and couldn't figure out why. Her teenage sons, she finally found out, were surfing porn sites which were downloading viruses into her computer.

She banned them from the computer but, not being able to be home at times it was really tough to monitor so she put a password lock on the computer as an administrator and would only remove it when she was at home and could monitor things.

Another way to find the best way is to go to a local Internet Cafe and ask the manager what he does to prevent this type of thing from happening. He will have the best in place because he can't afford to be contracting viruses constantly as it is too costly.

So make sure that your history is set for at least 2-3 days and everyday check where the little surfers have been. And deal with what you find out IMMEDIATELY.

The idea about going to a local internet cafe manager and ask them what they do to prevent people from surfing "bad sites" and getting viruses, is a great idea!

Yeah it is tough to keep your kids under control when they are on the internet unless you are right beside them. I agree with the password idea, so they cannot go online until you are at home and keep it in an open area where you can easily walk by and see what is on the screen.

That or only agree to surf together, but I am sure teenagers would HATE that idea heh. Ah, teenagers!

There is a program that you can purchase that will capture all of your child's activity within Myspace. I can't remember the name of it right now but I was just reading about it a couple weeks ago. I will look it up and post the link here when I find it.
