Keyloggers

peekaboo from from my desk! -

I have heard there is a program that someone can add to your computer through some type of program that tracks your key strokes. That way they can get all of your personal information and hopefully get in to your bank accounts. How do you know if you have this? Is there a free program you can download that scans for this?

I have never heard of anything like that and I would greatly doubt it. I can think of no "honest" download site that would even have that available to anyone.

If anyone knows of it as well I'm sure they are not going to come in here and admit it.

The only way that something like that could possibly happen, and I sincerely doubt that too, is with a virus specific for picking up your information.

Comment #2 zoya from middle of america -

That's so strange. Yeah I have never heard of it before and i would think that would be nearly impossible. Unless you buy your computr that was put together, piece by piece by some friend of a friend of a friend. But even then, the odds are very very very slim. Or at least i hope so! Haha.

Comment #3 Keter from the garage door -

Keyloggers are a very real threat and one should make sure that one's system is free of them. Spyware programs will turn them up, and one should immediately change all passwords if one is detected.

Comment #4 matt from right there!!! -

How common are key loggers? And one more thing can you trace where they can from? Wait these are the same program you use to watch your kids activities while on the computer. I guess they are not all bad.

Comment #5 Conyngham from the windy city -

Do the standard anti-virus programs provide protection against keyloggers being installed? If this is not the case then one is leaving one's system wide open to backdoor threats, and this is exactly what I am using an anti-virus program to prevent!

Comment #6 Kings from parallel street -

I think that as they can be regarded as legitimate applications, they are not likely to be detected by your virus program unless they are part of some suspicious attachment that you are trying to open. Use some decent spyware software to find and eradicate them.

Comment #7 Plums from the thrush tree -

Why would keylogger programs be regarded as legitimate applications? Do they have any function other than for nefarious purposes such as those engaged in by hackers to obtain your pin numbers etc? Who would use them otherwise?

Comment #8 George from Montana -

They could be used for debugging purposes and for the creation of macros to automate processes.

Some might consider it legitimate for security purposes... ie: employers monitoring employees net use...

Comment #9 Delino from California -

There must be some scanners out there, but I have never looked for one. If you do detect one at work make sure that you use it to your advantage by typing brilliant e-mails about how great your job and boss are :)

Comment #10 Conyngham from the windy city -

Interesting. I did a quick online search and turned up a number of highly legitimate software companies that are marketing keyloggers, and reading a little about their advertising blurb makes it clear that they do have a real and legitimate function! As long as the don't arrive uninvited via a trojan horse!

Comment #11 Plums from the thrush tree -

Come to think of it, parents would probably be keen to use them to monitor their children's online activities, and the same could be said for checking whether employees are goofing off during working hours! When viewed from this perspective they don't sound ominous at all!
