What to do about talking to friends online?

Thank author of this post/commentI have a few online friends that I only know exclusively on the internet. I've known them for many years now, and we trust each other completely. But whenever I go to talk to them on MSN, my mother always lingers around and asks me about what I'm doing. I have no privacy on here, and I know that if she found out I was talking to "random strangers from the internet" she would freak out, even though I've known these people for a very long time. What can I do so she doesn't realize I'm talking to them?

Thank author of this post/comment"Random Strangers"

Like it or not people you know only online ARE random strangers and they could be VERY DANGEROUS, and that is regardless of YOUR AGE!

Sure there are lots of great people out there... but the technology hides any way to see the real person behind the words.

You are enamored with the words you see, not the actual person behind them! There a huge difference! Good luck!

You know what your mom's reaction could be, so I think you have to get some privacy when you get to talk to your online friends. But you know, even how long you have know a person online, it is not really a guarantee that he is a good or real friend. There are already a lot of cases on the internet where people are scammed so you have to be cautious with that.

That is true. There are lots of people online who would just plot a scheme against you. And so we have to be prepared, ready and very cautious about them. It would be hard which friends are good and which one are just faking for the sake of getting information from you. And so you have to be very careful in giving personal information.

Being careful all of the time is the key to this kind of online scams.
