Risk of Leaving Computer On Overnight

Is it much of a risk to leave a computer turned on and connected to the internet when not using it?

I use a software firewall.

Thank author of this post/commentThere is really not much more risk.. but if it is infected with a virus or trojan, it would give people that much more time to exploit your system.

What is your need or desire to have it on all night?

Mr. Giggles

Wow I leave my computer running all day everyday and my Norton Anti-virus has run up.

I do not know? And why do you keep your computer and internet all on at night even if not used? I suggest that you turn it off when not in use, like you turn your tv and radio off when your wasted already listening and watching on it.

Beside form making your computer safe from any hack threats, you will also be saving lots of money form electric and internet bills..

Aside from leaving the computer running, will leaving the Internet open waste electricity and Internet bills?

#5

moy

The much I know about leaving your computer on is that it faces the risk of a power surge burning it's power supply.

I would not think of leaving any electronic on the whole night because I am used to the habit of switching any of these off. Why do you normally switch off your TV every night?

Nice journal Emily but I am just wondering how it is related to this forum?

Chie

Well moy has a point, funny isn't it but the problem that could occur and you could be facing is the possibility of fire that might result on unplugged appliances such as in this case an internet plug.

I have no idea if it is a security threat but still i would suggest that you unplug everything at night. Or better yet, try to wake up once in a while to make sure that nothing bad is happening.

Thank author of this post/commentNot that it would be a bad idea (for energy savings) but do you know anyone who actually unplugs all their electrical equipment at night? I think using the master fuse or circuit breaker might be a good idea.

Save power, save EMF radiation while you sleep, and while you are at it make sure your phone is disconnected so you save interruptions too!

Yeah, i do disconnect my phone line sometimes, most especially when i am terribly tired and needs some rest, a very long rest and deep sleep. How i love to sleep.

People on earth, why don't we just keep the computer shut when not in use, not only that we can save a lots from out electric bills, we can also save energy and did you know how important that is? Saving?

Virginia

Have to agree with that, why not just turn of everything not just the computer but all other appliance when not in use. My gosh, lets save energy and money.

I don't know if there is anyrisk. But if you are not using the computer, why do you need to have it turned on?

I have the computer near my bed and it is imposible for me sleep with it turned on.

Besides it is a waste of energy as some people here have said.

Thank author of this post/comment"Real Geeks"

Real geeks have merged their consciousness with their computers and therefore need to have their computers turn on all the time! Plus they often take so long to boot its just plain better to have them always ready to compute.

Also you can set them up to do decryption processes when not being used.

There are very many a reason to leave one's computer on during the night and not even bother shutting it down, actually, but on very rare occasions, probably twice a month at most should one do so. It saves power, it saves with booting time, and as mentioned, the consciousness of geeks are simply fused to their machines, so they require that it be on, even while they are asleep.

Eve

This is what I have learned about it at least. I love to be proven wrong, because it would have meant that I had learned the right way, after all.

Dean

What type of computer does Eve have? Most computer just need about 30 seconds to boot or even less in some.

And if you want to save time booting there is always energy saving options on computer when it becomes idle for a certain periods of time that you would set. Putting it is sleep mode or hibernate mode might better if you don't want to turn it off.

Thank author of this post/comment"Windows Boot Time"

5+ minutes if you are lucky and then the time to get all your programs and files open again.

eve

Thirty seconds is pushing it with the most computers Dean. Those computers you are talking about probably runs windows basic on a 4gh processor. I could imagine that booting up in about thirty seconds to a minute. As mentioned by #16, the average boot time of a Windows PC is five minutes.

Only time I left my PC running all night was when I was downloading a Torrent movie, or some other program.

I had a boss once that used to tell all of the employees to leave their computers on all night.

He never said why, but we did it.
