my dad fell for a scam!

Thank author of this post/commentWas not sure where to put this but thought maybe internet security would be suitable?

Anyway my dad called me all panicked. He told me that [he's new to the internet life] that he was surfing and all the sudden something popped up. It said that he had a virus and that they could get rid of it if he paid 100 dollars via credit card.... and HE DID IT! He lost 100 bucks over nothing. *shakes head*

right there!!!
Thank author of this post/commentI think that you could complain to the credit card company. That is very much fraud. You are protected against fraud by your credit card company. I would dispute the charge right away!!

Thank author of this post/commentI don't believe you have a leg to stand on. There's always fine print on the transaction pages and they have usually covered themselves very well. Unless you lie about it and say that you have absolutely no knowledge of the transaction, they'll probably say that you willingly purchased the product. You'll probably also find that he didn't notice the popup saying something like your computer may be at risk. Then again, I'm probably giving these scammers way too much credit. Sorry to hear about this.

The world wide web is like a mirror image or an alternate world like real life so expect to have scoundrel and thieves here. Unluckily your father fell for a common internet scam. The only difference between the real world versus the online world is the implementation of laws. Real world law is more securer and has more fangs against crime unlike its unlike counterpart, the cyberlaws. I Guess this taught (but hopefully not traumatized) you and you're father about internet security.

Have your father gone out of his mind? Why did he do that in the first place, if he panicked then why would he call you before paying that swindler.

But your post serves as a warning for all of us who are computer buffs. Sometimes we learn from each others experiences. Thank you for posting this experience in this forum. At least we now know how to deal with those swindlers.
