Have you hired an investigator

Have you ever had reason to hire an investigator for anything? Years ago I was asked to become a private investigator and I turned the job down because I really didn't want to investigate people who were cheating on their spouses so that the other spouse could get a divorce. I certainly didn't want to have to sit outside a house or apartment building for hours at a time picking my nails.

I have had to hire investigators when I worked in law for tracking down missing people or people who skipped out on bank loans etc. But I doubt if I would ever have to hire one in private life except maybe to track down someone for an inheritance.

I at one point cheated on my wife, yes i know bad, bad, bad. Anyway i noticed this man following me for a couple days. I'm a pretty observative guy so i noticed him pretty quickly. One day i saw him following my car and i parked and waited for him to park a nice distance behind and i went up to him. Demanded to know who hired him etc. It turned out that it was my wife's mother who did that. Irony is that later i found out my wife was cheating on me too, so...

But no, never hired one. That must be a pretty strange job.

If I thought my husband was cheating, I would follow him myself. Cut out the middle man. As long as you get evidence you are good to go. Then you aren't paying an expensive investigator. I bet not too many people have hired an investigator unless they are business owners looking for information on someone or something.

I would figure more business people hire investigators than for personal reasons. I luckily have never had a reason to hire an investigator. I suppose more people hire investigators in certain areas of the country.

My sister in law hired a private investigator after she suspected her first husband to be cheating on her. He in fact was (even though he denied it profusely). When she showed proof of his affair, he finally broke down and admitted it.

Comment #5 Callie from The North -

If I suspected my husband of cheating, I don't think I'd go so far as hire a PI, but if he was having an affair and was not readily admitting it, then I might consider hiring one.

Having been covertly harassed by a former employer for many years, I am considering hiring a private investigator because I have not been able to prove who he is. Many people know who he is as he uses them to do his dirty work (harass me) but they all cover for him. I want to make sure that if I move to another location, he won't brainwash the people there like he has here. Does anybody have any suggestions for obtaining the proof I need without an investigator? I'm poor and can't really afford one which is why I haven't hired one so far. Any advice/insight would be greatly appreciated. He is a doctor with a lot of resources and influence.

I think private investigators should only be used for business.. If you suspect your significant other is cheating, deal with it yourself. It isn't right for some stranger to follow you around in your personal life seeing everything you do. Now if a bank or lawyer hires one for business, thats different.

What are the benefits of hiring a Private Investigator?

Private investigators are licensed by the state to gather information and engage in surveillance. Private investigators understand what is permitted under state law. If the potential for legal proceedings exists (e.g., divorce, child custody, alimony, etc.), hiring a private investigator can help minimize your risk. Many people have obtained useful information about a spouse on their own, but were unable to use the information because of how it was obtained. Not only does hiring a private investigator help minimize the risk of information being thrown out during legal procedures, but in most cases PIs are allowed to testify on your behalf. And if negative information about your spouse is going to come out, it is usually beneficial to have a third party present the information - it will seem less biased and more credible.

What are the disadvantages of hiring a Private Investigator?

A major consideration when hiring a PI is the cost involved. Depending on where you live, hiring a PI can easily run into the thousands of dollars. And while there are always less expensive options available, given potential consequences involved, the additional expense may be worth every penny.
