| Nigerian Scams A girlfriend of mine recently fell for one of those Nigerian email scams telling her that some daughter of a dead philanthropist will send her money for safe keeping. She received the money and went directly to the police after realizing there was something wrong with all of this. Good for her. And I hope at least this puts at least one scammer away for good. |
| What do you mean "She received the money". There is no money the scam is the Nigerians try to get you to send THEM money in hopes of the "big payoff". Costa Ricans pull a similar scam telemarketing people saying the won the lottery and see to send (by western union) payment of the "taxes" first. Of course there is no lottery and no taxes. |
| I heard aboutt hat scam as well. It's actually quite popular and it's usually where you get an email from a person who asks for your help. He/she gives a story about a kin of a person has left a large sum of money earned through illegal means. He has died and now the person in charge wishes to give it to a charity but requires a foreigner to help him conduct the work. The requirement is that the helper should have a bank account in from where the transaction could take place. If you open an account with a meager sum it would not convince the authorities so you have to keep a large sum for it. When you deposit a substantial sum your money vanishes in air without any traces of it. It is then that you realize the trap. Quite sad that some people would fall for that. I don't think your friend fell for this scam. It must have been something else? |
| Hard to believe that the Nigerian scam is still going strong after all these years. I have received several of these 'proposals' over the years, and when one sees how poorly they are written and how obviously unlikely the scenario they claim is, it is amazing that they have had the success rates that they have. I suppose the success of all spam is that if you send out enough, sooner or later someone will bite, and if the returns are big enough, it makes it worthwhile for the scammers, but I really can't understand how. |
| Yeah, I don't know how people can even fall for these. I suppose there are the gullible ones out there that believe everything. |
| I get over 20 of these scams in my email EVERY SINGLE DAY! I decided to post the more classic ones on my blog. I hope their email address gets scraped off my blog and spammed just as much as mine does. |

| The economy is causing people to fall deeper into debt and becoming vulnerable to con artists, frauds and scammers. Some of these wicked doers prey particularly on people who are in a desperate search for credit counseling. If anyone asks you to pay debt-relief service fees upfront, without doing any work for you first, that is definitely a red flag. It's the same way with payday loans. If someone is offering you payday loans, but you haven’t been approved yet, and they ask you to pay a fee, run! Scam artists are even victimizing many Americans by selling information about federal job opportunities. To top it off, they even advertise in the classified sections of newspapers, offering to help job seekers find and apply for federal jobs – for a fee! So it is important that you are aware of how to notice signs of a scam and preventative measures you can make to avoid being a victim. |
| These scams sound fishy from the word go...it is a wonder that anyone would even lend an ear to such. When I normally get some of these, I simply delete and label these as spam. What still intrigues me is how phisphing in general manages to access your account details and sweep the whole of it. It is simply a case of fraudsters taking advantage of an educated and informed population but one that tends to be less cautious. Cant this category of people be brought to book? |
| What? your girlfriend received money? wow, how did that happen, I thought those phishing e mails would tend to get money or vital information from you and not the other way around.. Have you asked your girlfriend what was that money sent to her for? is it a huge amount of money? Whew, atleast she was the one who sent out with cash, but what for? What happened after you guys surrender the money to the authorities? |
| I also would want to ask the same question. What had happened after you surrender the money to the authorities? I know it is quite impossible to locate the spammer who had send your girlfriend the huge amount of money, I am just wondering what happens to the money. I hope the original poster could elaborate more of the story, i am curious why the spammer sent your girlfriend money. |
| Maybe the spammer would want to relocate the money. I think that is the reason why the spammer handled the money to the original poster's girlfriend. Considering that it is a big sum of money, have the thought of keeping the money crosses your mind? I mean, it is a big amount and sent directly to your girl so what is the reason you surrender that money away.. Can we know the reason? |
| There are lots of phishing mails.. i usually have them in my inbox like three mails a week.. that is the least.. You should know if it is a scam or not, make yourself familiar with it and never fall under it. Never click on a link that is fishy, , it might lead you to a site that might attack your computer. It happened to me, and sadly it happened twice. |
| Nigerian scammers are all over the internet. Most victims are those who are not smart enough to find out who they are talking with. |
| maybe you are right, and i hope you are smart enough to say that. I think in some cases, you have to experience and be a victim to know exactly what are those phishing mails really are. Its experience that is the best teacher right? but i think that phishing emails does not only came from Nigeria, there are lots of them, and those always seeks for safe place to hide large sum of money or stuffs like that. |
| THIS WILL HAPPEN ONCE IN LAC.BELIEVING THEN OTHERS WILL FALL IN THE SCAM.EVEN THIS MAY BE A SCAM.WHY PEOPLE WANT TO EARN MONEY WITHOUT DOING JOB.UNTIL GREEDY PEOPLE ARE THERE SCAMS WILL BE THERE.I CAME TO KNOW THAT EVEN NIGERIAN GOVERNMENT IS ENCOURAGING THIS.THIS MAILS CAN BE CUT OFF IN THE GENERATING PLACE ITSELF IF NIGERIAN GOVERNMENT WISHES.SCAMS ARE THERE NOT ONLY FROM NIGERIA BUT FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD. |
| Don't trust anything on the web that you do not recognize. The web is crawling with scams and shenanigans. |
| Actually, sometimes even things that a person does recognize on the web can easily be something that is also a scam or some sort of shenanigan, surely. |
| As much as I would want to say that "only children can fall to such trickery" but there are still some unknowing people who haven't been scammed all their life and sometimes they are the easy victims of these forms of scams. |
| Who can tell when the time of unfortunate foolishness strikes us. Sometimes, even if we thought we knew everything, some incidence just happens and we become a victim. |
| You have a point there Yuri, but this is not an excuse, sometimes people just make that as an excuse of all the foolishness that they do in life, they always blame it to 'accidents'. I think it would be best if people would be aware of the bad things out there so that they can avoid those things to strike them. Just be very careful at all times guys. |
| That is very true JR. Sometimes we thought we thought that we are not that vulnerable to such trickery and yet we really are. So just like anybody else I would like to suggest that each and everyone of us must be really careful all of the time. Most especially during this time when we are living in a world where bad guys would do no good to anyone just to get their interests. |
