VOIP Privacy

With all this talk about the NSA looking at phone records... what about content?

With VOIP phones the transmission is just TCP/IP packets with headers that very clearly specify the number called AND THE CONTENT of the call!

Easily intercepted, stored in a database and reviewed based on the information.

With all this talka bout privacy and VOIP becoming such an important new technology consumers want to know how easy it is for VOIP calls to be intercepted.

Drop by VOIP Discussion at http://www.voip-discussion.com and post your feelings about VOIP privacy

Looks like maybe that site needs a little work first. Let us know when it is working correctly and tease us with a little interesting tidbits from it too.

There are certainly ways of intercepting voip calls, but the good news is that the methods that I know of can only be implemented if the call orrigionates from a voip phone or client, and then goes through the pstn (public switched telephone network) to a regular land or cellular line. There is a program called "vomit" which stands for voice over misconfigured internet telephony, and with it a user can monitor and then capture all of the tcp packets being sent out as your voice. This is because the packets, in order to reach somebody using a regular or cellular telephone, have to first travel across the pstn. Enter the ip address that you want to monitor, and vwala.

Kind of unrelated, but i foten have to place relay calls [I'm Deaf], and the content is usually recorded. I am unsure about internet relay calls but back in the days when I used the TTY/TDD, i knew that they kept files on each customer and most of the conversations if it was something the relay operator thought was important. That thought always disturbed me!

Well, unless you are making obscene phone calls or calls that can't be overheard then you have nothing to worry about.

If you are making calls with respect to banking or credit card information then I would suggest that you discuss everything about how you can handle it without disclosing any pertinent information, such as explaining why you are want it, you are deaf and using a voipe phone, and would appreciate it if the same information can be sent to them via either e-mail or letter through the post office.

This way you are protecting yourself and I don't know of any financial agencies who would protest the fact that you want to prevent any problems for yourself. In fact you could even fax the information that they require from an outside fax machine so it can't be traced back to you.

If it is bank information go to the closest branch of your bank if not your bank but the closest branch will even fax your letter for free to your exact branch.
