Never put DL# on your checks

Thank author of this post/commentI have heard on tv that we should not put our Drivers Liscence numbers on our checks. Most places, however, will not accept a check unless you put your liscence # on it. Ironic don't you think.

Thank author of this post/commentMany places verify your check transaction by sending your checking account number (from your check) and your DL # to a central reporting databases.

Now, if someone steals your checks (but not your drivers license) they wouldn't be able to provide all the correct information (unless you so nicely has your DL # imprinted on your checks already).

Once you write your DL # on your check, it isn't likely someone will steal that check and try to use it.

They also want your DL # to track you down if the check bounces.

Look you up in the big database and track you down when your check bounces are the reasons they want it.

Whether it helps or hinders if someone steals your checks probably isn't part of their equation.

I actually remember cashing my paychecks at my companies bank and having to give my driver's license number. The only reason you have to do that is if you don't have an account at that particular bank. That was what I believe to be the only reason for myself to do it.
