Privacy or Paranoia?

Ghost of Will (200.172.107.145) -

Can those of you who feel you have nothing to hide as a justification for government snooping, let us know if your home or apartment has curtains or other window blinds, and if so, why?

Comment #1 Moe from Vancouver, Canada -

I have curtains because I don't want my neighbours to see me doing things that I would prefer to be done behind closed doors.. or closed curtains heh. It's only common sense. I sure wouldn't want to see my neighbour doing something in the bedroom *shudder* :)

Comment #2 Elroy from New York -

So you obviously have something to hide and you need to be treated as a criminal!

Comment #3 Moe from Vancouver, Canada -

So i should leave the curtains open and have people see me walked around naked? I would think some people would appreciate the fact that I keep that hidden? It's just common sense.

Comment #4 peekaboo from from my desk! -

I have curtains because I don't want any one to see what a terrible house keeper I am!! LOL There is a time and place to have your privacy invaded. And if your actions can cause considered criminal, then that is when the government should be allowed to step in.

Comment #5 Sweetness from Earth, the Universe -

I don't have curtains in my living room I have plants across the window sill, if they want to look with binoculars, be my guest. If they get a charge out of watching people run around naked then maybe they will leave the porn alone and we won't have so much child porn.

I have curtains on my Computer Room because I don't want people to see what I have so they can break in. Nothing to hide just expensive electronics so it is protecting me from invasion for theft.

And I have curtains on my bedroom windows because I need to sleep in the dark and when the sun comes up I don't like to be wakened that early.

So you see nothing to hide, no guilty conscience as being the reason for curtains.

BUT... if I found out about terrorists in my building you better believe I would welcome the spying on them.

I had a funny thing happen to me. I live on the top floor and went out on my balcony one warm summer night. Righ in front of me one floor down was a couple without any curtains and they were going at it like two monkeys in heat and I certainly didn't appreciate the fact that I couldn't sit in peace on my balcony. They had also left all their lights on so there was no imagination needed. Not that they should be hiding but I just think it was a matter of respect for the neighbours and they should have had curtains.

Comment #6 Milly from Wisconsin -

LOL sweetness!! That is funny. They probably knew you were watching, that is what turned them on!! Just because I want curtains on my window for privacy does not make you a hypocrit. I don't like the feeling of being watched.

Comment #7 Suzie from Washington DC -

I have miniblinds and curtains on every window. I just like having as much privacy as possible. Sometimes people knock at the door and I don't even answer it. They can't look through my windows and see if I am home and I like it that way.

Comment #8 Milly from Wisconsin -

I personally thing that having the government snoop in our lives is just common sense. After 911, things are different and we need to protect our soil.

Wow, the comments in this thread are really disturbing. You folks need to wise up about the dangers of government surveillance. You need to realize that it's a slippery slope, and that throughout history every form of surveillance ends up being used for reasons other than its original intent.

For those here who are willing to give up all their freedom so that authorities have an easier time of it (catching "terrorists", child pornographers, drug dealers, illegal immigrants, pick your flavor of the day) you obviously believe yourself to be law-abiding and therefore immune from this kind of repressive action by the State. But maybe 5 years down the road when your rights are gone (given away without a fight by people like you) the State may be coming after YOU. Maybe they just finished torturing someone who gave up your name, like what is happening now to so many Muslim Arabs innocents locked away in CIA black sites, secret interrogation prisons across the globe.

These are dangerous times, yes. But the dangerous people are in Washington and London. We need less repression by our government. Not more.

Finally, I would urge folks her to begin using PGP encryption. Protect your privacy. Your government will not protect it for you.

I have curtains and no I don’t have anything to hide. I like my privacy, little girls like there’s too. Just because you have curtains doesn’t mean you have something to hide. There are predators everywhere. I don’t want them to get any ideals.
