Has anybody had any success with using a proxy to cover your tracks? I'm looking for a good solution for when I browse some of my competitors sites and I don't want them to see a pattern in my IP activity.

Try Tor. It's a free proxy that even has a useful Firefox extension. You can run a client and/or server and do exactly what you asked about.

Yeah it's a really useful program and it's very very powerful. Just be careful to set it up correctly before using it or you may not be utilizing the security aspects you are looking for.

Remember some proxies send the HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR variable with your orignal IP address. Also some Java can be used to read your local IP address and forward that to the service (which could be your internet IP if you are connected directly, or something like 192.168.1.15 if you are using a DSL router with NAT enabled).

I used proxy sites before in our school because the university is blocking all sites containing PORN or GAMES on the sites.

And its a success. I also made use of it in a forum where my IP was blocked by the moderator who I engaged on a fight with. He blocked my IP but then I still can log in because of those proxies.

I would recommend you to use http://safevpn.net - you will be able to hide your IP and have traffic encrypted as well.

Very good.. but with a static IP you don't get the obsecurity you might if you used different proxies (ie: different IP's).
