Thank author of this post/commentWhat is the best firewall to use these days? I am using the Windows firewall built into XP, but my Nortons security package offers theirs as the better alternative. Don't know which one to disable as I assume it is not a good idea to have 2 competing with each other on the same system.

Thank author of this post/commentI used ZoneAlarm, which was free, for years, but gradually found that it just wasn't doing the job. I now use the one built into my Norton Internet Security package and find it to does the job well. I don't enable the Windows one as there could be conflict.

A highly secure location
Thank author of this post/commentKerio personal firewall was very good, but I don't know if it's free anymore. I read up in PC magazine the other day about a great free one but I've forgotten what it was called. I'll have to look it up but you could do a search on pcmag.com for free firewall and see if it comes up.

Thank author of this post/commentThe built in Windows firewall is pretty decent as well. I can't speak for Vista, I hear that's very powerful but VERY annoying. I do think Windows is sufficient for incoming. It's the outgoing that is more of a concern but that's more of a luxury than a necessity at least for me.

Thank author of this post/commentI used the Windows firewall until I installed the Norton's Security Suite, and I then changed to Norton's firewall which is excellent. For a while I left both enabled until I read an article online that this could lead to potential conflicts. Zone Alarm used to be very effective in earlier iterations, but later versions seemed to cause endless hassles for some people I know. Each system is different though, so one shouldn't generalize.

Thank author of this post/commentHere is my problem with Norton. New computer with windows xp, norton preinstalled. I didn't touch the configuration.

When I ftp a large number of photos with wsftp, norton keeps stopping the transfer and popping up a window that a worm is active.

I tell it to ignore the problem and check the box asking not to be annoying by such crap in the future. Yet, I have to babysit the wsftp transfer because nortion pops up every 30 seconds or so to stop this vicious worm (my uploading of my photos).

The right security for your pc is so hard to find these days. I don't have the right resources or money to avail such expenxive antivirus and firewall like AVG or Kaspersky so all I am left off is an avast free home edition. I also avoid going to malicious (which includes porn) websites which usually carries these harmful codes and opening up unregistered and spam emails. We are also responsible for the security of our own computers.
