'Best free virus software'

In you opinion what is the best free virus software you can get? I'm pretty cheap, but I like to be well protected.

For a freebie (as long as it's for personal use) I always go for avast. Do a search on Google and download it. An excellent choice for a free scanner.

Does avast also have constant updates available that keep up to the minute with the constantly evolving new threats out there? How do they manage to do this and still keep it free? This is what I am paying Norton for as I assumed that it was an expensive business to keep abreast of all the new viruses.

At the end of the day you are best protected by using a well established anti-virus package that has frequent and regular updates provided by automatically scheduled downloads which take place transparently in the background as you work. I believe this is still the safest and wisest course.

I have tried both Nortons and McAfee and found the latter very difficult to customize to my requirements. Truth is that Norton's also caused many a hassle along the way, but I have used it for so long now that I just renew my annual subs without giving it much thought. I know people who won't touch it though as it seems to hog a lot of system resources.
