Antivirus software have become a big industry over the last few years. Nowadays one can't imagine a PC running without antivirus in windows. Linux is still not affected in that way, but who knows? But the good news is that still there are few good antivirus software available.

Sam there will always be good virus software available to the public or the whole computer industry would go down the drain in about 48 hours. As the hackers and so called "smart guys" who build viruses into programs because they can come up with new ways and new ideas so do the companies like Norton, McAfee and other virus companies have hackers that can track them just ast fast and develop and anti virus to counter-act them. Thank God for the developers of anit-virus protection. Without them our whole world would fall apart in a hand basket as people went back and got used to doing things the old fashioned way.

Could somebody point me toward a couple of free Antivirus programs that actually work and are good? I always assumed that if it was free, that it would be defective and pointless. Was I wrong to assume that?

I am using a free antivirus and it is keeping my systems completly protected from all attacks. So you can surely try the following in addition to a firewall. Free Antivirus a) AVG b) aVast Free Firewall a) ZoneAlarm b) Comodo

Yes if you go to google.com and click on MORE... and then click on Pack you will see Norton antivirus download. You can download this for free but at the end of 6 months it will run out but you can re-download it AFTER you remove it from your computer. Then you will have it for another six months.

So the free is just as reliable as if you paid for it. Has anyone had system problems after downloading a free antivirus?

I use the AVG free anti-virus software and it seems to work fine, I never have problems, and I've never paid for anti-virus software. I like the idea of the free Norton download and then after 6 months just recycle and download again. I am going to look in to that, and I think I would recommend that to anyone looking to pay for or find free anti-virus software.

Don't use outlook express or any other pop based email program. Don't look at attachments, especially those from your mother.Better yet use Linux and an email program that highlights information (urls, email addresses) etc before you read a message. A message from your "bank" looks pretty fake with addresses like tripod.com in them. But that is all hidden with most email programs.

I've been using NOD32 as my anti-virus and its been great ever since. Although I really do advise you on using Linux for a safer browsing. I hope this can help you.

Ask at your favorite local computer store! If you are looking to steal a copy, why not use one of the great anti virus programs that is offered free rather than stealing?

Vista which I was forced to use with a new laptop. Have to keepM$ in business. My Norton ran out of time, so I decide to unload Norton and load Comcast Macafee. That has totally hosed vista as far as IE and Firefox. The blasted thing won't unload. The two seem to have some sort of core war going, neither wanting to unload. I have AVG on two Win 2000 systems no problems. AVG and Zonelarm free editions have kept me cool for years. Vista's a nightmare, if it didn't come bundled with my new Compaq Laptop would have buried under somereasonalbe version of M$. But because it is so new drivers and other problems loading redhat or another distribution. Luckily I have ASUS EEE running Linux, no problems there. Anyone expeirence a malware problem with IE, Firefox. It seems the DHCP is working but IE and Firefox cannot connect. If I could I would just use linux end of story.
