YouTube: EFF Press Conference After NSA Wiretapping Court Hearing - Wiretapping
YouTube: EFF Press Conference After NSA Wiretapping Court Hearing www.eff.org The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) told a federal judge today that the government should not be allowed to use the "state secrets privilege" to preempt the class-action lawsuit against AT&T. eff's suit accuses AT&T of collaborating with the National Security Agency (NSA) in illegally spying on millions of Americans -- handing over customers' telephone and Internet records and communications without any legal authority. Department of Justice lawyers argued today that even if the NSA program is illegal, pursuing the case might expose "state secrets." However, EFF attorneys asked the judge to allow the case to proceed, considering the privilege in regards to specific evidence and situations instead of derailing the suit all together.
I think that everyone has the right to remain silent. But I think that it is bad to spy anyone without proper legal authority. Everyone around the world has the right to have a private life. Privacy is very important to many people, It is the only way that we can have a peaceful life without anyone watching our moves.
There was once a wiretapping issue in the Philippines against their former president. That was a big controversy that almost destroyed the reputation of the president. I just don't know if it was totally resolved or not because a lot of speculations against the case. I think it is really difficult to deal such issue and people seem to steal the privacy of the other party. Hence, they have to face the court.
This is a tough one to call. Without the ability to perform that kind of surveillance, would the government be able to stop as many potential terrorist threats as they do? On the other hand, is te government capable of not using that kind of information for any other purpose then to keep tabs on potential terrorists? Is the government to be trusted that much? Very tough one indeed.
Vince is right, it is not right to know certain info about someone especially if you have no legal basis to have. I have been hearing news about wiretapping and it is quite alarming especially to the people involve. There are certain personal talks that you do at phone and without any sense on what is happening you'll be left thinking and alarm when you discover that someone is hearing what is only between you and the person your talking with.
I think there are these pros and cons in wiretapping. One thing that concerns many people would be the issue on privacy. But imagine how wiretapping would aid in so many crimes and problems with finding a criminal. However, let us hope that this technology be used accordingly away from those who might abuse it. Thanks for sharing in here guys and have a great day ahead to all of you.
